Social Food: Sensory Research

2024 December

This project explores the relationship between food as a sensory experience and the impact of social interaction. My research began by identifying common associations with food, most notably its deep connection to family, friends, and social gatherings.

Sensory Research: To investigate how our senses shape the food experience, I conducted an experiment where each participant ate the same type of tostada, but with one sense removed. The results highlighted that vision plays a crucial role in how we perceive taste.

Social Research: Next, I explored how social settings influence flavor perception. Participants first tasted a tart alone, then again in a group setting designed to mimic a party. Despite using the exact same recipe, the tart was rated as tasting 12% better when enjoyed socially.

These findings inspired a series of speculative tabletop objects designed to challenge and play with how we collectively experience food, an idea that is in out collective unconsciousness.
